Technology still needs an audience

skills for publishing

In a technological age we all have to think that little bit more about what we say, how we say it and where we say it. After all, what’s said on Google, stays on Google. Well mostly. That’s not to say technology is a hindrance, far from it. It has helped create a platform for voices to be heard and opened up more routes to market than ever before, across many sectors, especially within publishing.

The international publishing arena is a particularly broad, interesting yet intricate marketplace which has evolved greatly in recent times. There have long been many historic complexities to overcome and whilst some linger, technological advances have led to far more doors being opened than closed for publishers.

As a company driven by technology we’re always looking to provide our members with added value by securing new and innovative ways to help them boost their rights and licensing business on a global scale and get the right works in front of the right type of audience. Hence the recent launch of Spotlight, our innovative new promotional tool showcasing exclusive rights for key titles from publishers across a range of global territories.

Spotlight spawned from conversations with publishers across various territories who expressed their growing interest in acquiring rights for Spanish language works. After meeting with a number of Spanish publishers – many at a fantastic Book Machine event In Barcelona funnily enough – it soon became clear there was an appetite to explore new ways to engage with existing and emerging markets to bolster rights and licensing business on an international scale.

This obviously led to its development which we hope will work to generate additional interest and greater worldwide exposure for some fantastic, and highly marketable, titles.

The inaugural Spotlight webinar is now live and focuses on some of the hottest new Spanish language works from Planeta, Roca Editorial and Plataforma Editorial across YA, non-fiction, mystery and women’s fiction. It offers exclusive access to the key titles currently available from a selection of the most forward-thinking Spanish language publishing houses. So why not check it out for yourself?

Spotlight is a good example of how technology can act as a great facilitator but more often than not technology is only as good as its audience. And building the right audience is where the real hard work can often lie.
