On Wednesday 25 September, a packed house of audiophiles gathered in London’s Century Club for the very first BookMachine Unplugged: Talking Audio event. BookMachine editorial board member Louise Newton (Audio Editor, Little Brown) introduced a panel of experts with an outstanding range of experience between them: Catherine Daly (Audio Editor, Faber & Faber), Paul Stark (Audio and Digital Manager, Orion Publishing Group), Helena Sheffield (Marketing & Communications Manager, Penguin Random House Audio) and Sarah Shrubb (Audio Publisher, Hachette Audio).

Love Audio Week: Celebrating audio publishers

Eliza Kavanagh is Communications Manager at the Publishers Association and has managed the Love Audio campaign since its inception in 2017. Love Audio Week is an initiative of the Publishers Association’s Audio Publishers Group.

In the three years that the Publishers Association has run this campaign on behalf of our Audio Publishers Group, the hashtag #LoveAudio has grown from a modest reach of 5 million over the course of Love Audio Week to this year reaching 26 million – an increase of 420%.

Creating Audiobooks: An Overview of the Production Process

Based in Somerset, Audio Factory is an audiobook production company commissioned by independent authors and publishers in the UK, North America and Australia to create audio versions of their titles in collaboration with a team of narrators they work with on a regular basis. Audio Factory’s co-founder and in-house producer, Arran Dutton, works as a project manager across all audiobook productions and liaises directly with title rights holders throughout the process.

Narrating audiobooks: an actor’s perspective

I’ve not been narrating audiobooks for that long really. I started when I left drama school in 2010, and have now read over 150 of them (some great, some not so great…!). It is a strange experience. You spend three or four days (sometimes longer), in what is essentially a padded cell, talking out loud to yourself in different voices. But if it’s a good book, I can’t think of many better ways to make a living. I love it. You get to meet and work with brilliant people, telling stories all week.
