Funders, researchers and librarians are facing the challenges of open access models. Traditional consortia deals are on the wane. Piracy is on the rise and predatory publishing threatens to exploit and undermine scholarly communications. Technological innovations seem to appear almost on daily basis - but which are really worth investing in?
The industry itself - and the world of academia - is challenged by fragmented policy in a world of fractured global politics.

Byron Russell, Ingenta
As Head of Ingenta Connect, Byron provides overall leadership and management of the commercial activities for Ingenta's publisher-facing CMS product, Ingenta Connect, spanning 280+ publisher clients and over 25,000 registered libraries. As a senior manager within the Group Sales and Marketing Division, Byron is responsible for the business development of the Ingenta Connect service and for managing its Account Management and Client Support teams in the US and UK. Byron has an extensive background in publishing management, primarily in the education space, and was actively engaged in the business development of Macmillan’s class-leading English Campus and Discover China programmes and CUP’s English360 LMS prior to joining Ingenta.
Charlie Rapple, Kudos
Charlie is Sales & Marketing Director and Co-founder of Kudos, a web-based service that helps researchers and their institutions and funders maximise the visibility and impact of their published articles. Charlie is a geek marketer, and finding the scholarly communications sector was like coming home. She has an insatiable interest in new techniques and technologies, about which she speaks and writes regularly. She is a volunteer for UKSG and an Associate Editor of Learned Publishing. Prior to co-founding Kudos, Charlie has worked for TBI Communications, Publishing Technology, CatchWord, and Ingenta.
Phill Jones, Digital Science
Phill is Director of Innovation at Digital Science. He works in the Digital Science Consultancy where he supports publishers with strategic decision making in editorial, marketing and sales, based on scientometric analyses. He joined Digital Science from portfolio company ReadCube, where he held the position of VP of Business Development. Prior to this, he was the Editorial Director at Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), the first academic video journal. Phill participates in several industry committees and co-chairs the SSP publications task force. He is a regular contributor the scholarly kitchen blog and received the SSP emerging leader award in 2016.
Duncan Campbell, John Wiley & Sons
Duncan is Director, Digital Licensing and Sales Partnerships, with John Wiley & Sons, where he is responsible for licensing and business development for Wiley’s academic journal and database content. He is also engaged in developing Wiley’s strategies and policies with regard to government affairs, open access and text and data mining, and represents Wiley on several industry boards and committees.
