SUMMARY:Talking Design (BookMachine Unplugged 2021)
DESCRIPTION:Print book versus digital thumbnail: What are we designing for?\nPublishers have grappled for decades with adapting print designs for a digital environment. Driven initially by the requirements for the Amazon thumbnail\, little has changed and the challenge remains – what exactly is a designer doing when they design a book cover? Are they producing a luxuriously printed book cover that will drive sales in a book store setting? Or are they creating a postage stamp-sized icon to be displayed beside book data in a digital environment?  \n  \nEffects that add value on paper do not translate online. Production add-ons like foils\, embossing\, die cuts are worthless digitally. But digital offers unlimited options for exploration\, including animation and sound. How do we manage this inherent tension when we have limited time and staff to address two distinct requirements? How can we unlock the innovative and interactive potential of digital while still respecting the print book object? How can we harness designers’ power – the ultimate problem solvers – in addressing this challenge as part of an overall strategy?  \n  \nOn Wednesday 10th November\, 6–7pm GMT\, join an acclaimed international panel of creatives and art directors to consider the potential the digital thumbnail presents. We’ll hear about good and bad case studies\, get the sales and marketing perspective\, and debate the challenges and realities of design in publishing strategy. \n  \nTalking Design this year takes place during Design Season\, running from 1st November to 10th December 2021. \n  \n*This session will have live closed captioning available for viewers to toggle on or off as needed* \n  \nAbout BookMachine Unplugged 2021\nBookMachine Unplugged is an online and interactive programme of publishing events designed to offer real insights into what is working in publishing right now – and what the future of publishing may hold. \n  \nIf you’re a publishing professional who craves an explosion of knowledge\, ideas\, and personal development – in a strictly social and informal setting – this event series is for you! \n  \nEach of the six BookMachine Unplugged events programmed for this year will zoom in on a vital area of the publishing industry. SUMMARY:November Members' Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wonder for the November mixer!\nJoin us on Thursday 25th November from 6–7pm GMT to meet\, mingle and chat with other BookMachine members. We’re meeting on virtual networking platform\, Wonder\, again this month to help you tap into the conversations that matter most to you and meet the people you really want to meet. RSVP below and look out for the link to join us in your inbox a day or two ahead of the event. \n  \nWhat’s the mixer all about?\nOur mixers are informal and social online gatherings designed to help you wind down\, catch up and debrief with publishing people from across the industry. On the last Thursday of each month\, we gather together members who are up for connecting from wherever they are with their cameras switched on. We help to kick things off with conversation starters and ice-breakers to keep things flowing. \nWonder allows you to ‘move’ around the virtual room to meet different people and take part in lots of conversations – just as you might at an in-person event or party. Guests move their avatars around with their mouse\, joining a conversation by moving closer\, and leaving it by moving away. Simple as that! \n  \nWhat our members say:\n“I really loved Wonder. Excellent piece of software that makes conferences more interactive and personal. Being able to see that people are “Wonder”ing around is great – it gives you confidence to approach them and the idea of themed rooms is really nice. Having a good conversation starter was nice\, too.” – Dan Fridd\, UK Retail Success Manager at Edelweiss+ by Above the Treeline \n  \n“I thought it was excellent\, and significantly better than Zoom break out rooms. Definitely more flexible and more fun. It was great to meet and get a chance to have conversations with so many people.” – Helen Lloyd\, Audiobook Narrator \n  \nWhy should you join us?\n\nCatch up with friendly faces – Whether you’re craving real-life connections\, it’s been a while since you attended an event or you’re working remotely or solo within the industry\, our mixers give you the chance to get up to speed with what you’ve missed.\nMeet surprising people – Whilst there’s a core crowd each month\, different members attend when works for them\, meaning you can ‘bump into’ interesting professionals who you might not have met otherwise.\nDip into different areas of publishing – As well as mixing with a different crowd\, you can tap into varied departments through chatting with people from across the industry as well as around the world.\nDiscuss big industry topics\, or leave work behind – If you want to talk trends and big news from the last month\, there’s space for those conversations. However\, if you want to leave business at the door and make human connections\, you can join us for that too.
