The nominees for this year’s Hugo Awards were announced this past weekend, and brought with them a record-breaking number of nods for author Seanan McGuire. The annual awards recognising the best in science-fiction and fantasy this year see McGuire up for four awards under both her own name and her pen name, Mira Grant, with two nominees in one of those categories. As McGuire noted on her own blog: ‘here are my firsts for this year: First woman to appear on the ballot four times in fiction categories alone. First person to appear on the ballot five times in a single year. First person to appear on the ballot with a purely self-published work.’ She added: ‘I have eaten nothing but ice cream today. I have cried a lot.’

McGuire is up for Best Novel for Blackout, the final instalment of her Newsflesh zombie trilogy, facing competition from Kim Stanley Robinson, Lois McMaster Bujold, John Scalzi and Saladin Ahmed. Her novella San Diego 2014: The Last Stand of the California Browncoats – set in the same world as Blackout and chronicling a zombie invasion of a fan convention – is, fittingly, up for Best Novella, against work from Nancy Kress, Brandon Sanderson, Aliette de Bodard and Jay Lake. She has two entries in the Best Novellette category – “Rat-Catcher” and the previously referenced, self-published “In Sea-Salt Tears” – alongside one apiece from Thomas Olde Heuvelt, Catherynne M. Valente and Pat Cadigan. As well as all that, McGuire is nominated for work on her podcast SF Squeecast with her co-hosts Elizabeth Bear, Paul Cornell, Lynne M. Thomas and Catherynne M. Valente and producer David McHone-Chase.

The Hugo Awards will be presented over the weekend of 29 August-2 September as part of LoneStarCon3 in San Antonio, Texas. Full list of nominees follows.
