Assistant Editorial Project Manager [JOB POSTING]

An Assistant Editorial Project Manager is required to manage the book production process – from manuscript through editorial and design/typesetting stages to printed book – of allocated titles to schedule and to whitefox standards for both fiction and non-fiction titles.

The role involves working closely with both the in-house team of Project Managers and Editorial Directors and with a broader pool of freelancers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • editorial and operational oversight of ongoing projects for traditional publishers and self-publishing clients
  • devising and managing production schedules for multiple clients
  • adhering to, maintaining and further developing best practice processes and guidelines for editorial services
  • working with the management team to strengthen, maintain and further develop a standardised workflow and client offering
  • individual project management, including regular author and supplier contact
  • editorial responsibility for black-and-white desk editorial projects
  • supporting senior editors on both publishing lists and one-off projects
  • ensuring the consistent high quality of editorial work performed by freelancers
  • handling freelancer and author queries
  • collating proofs and checking revises
  • inputting text corrections into Word
  • managing and coordinating allocation of work to appropriate freelancers, negotiating fees and monitoring spend
  • checking jackets and covers and other relevant materials
  • balancing editorial integrity and commercial pragmatism
  • ensuring the editorial/production system data is updated appropriately
  • invoicing clients
  • supervising budgets of individual titles and monitoring spend in line with P&L sign-off
  • assisting in the acquisition process and helping to create publishing proposals Experience/skills/attributes required:
    • strong editorial skills – an eye for detail and inconsistencies
    • proven proofreading experience
    • the ability to manage several projects at once and organise a team of freelancers
    • the ability to devise and maintain schedules
    • an understanding of the processes through which a text passes from typescript to bound copy
    • strong Word and Excel skills
    • strong organisational skills
    • the ability, within a given project brief, to make necessary decisions to ensure books are produced in line with agreed budget and schedule

We’re looking for someone who can work with enthusiasm, initiative and flexibility as well as being comfortable working independently. You will of course have strong written and verbal communication skills and be a natural team player.
