The Profile–City University London Publishing Scholarship

City University

City University London’s MAs in Publishing and International Publishing invite applications for the 2015–2016 Profile–City Publishing Scholarship. Funded by Andrew Franklin of Profile Books and a charitable trust, the Scholarship will fund full UK/EU fees, £9000, to support a candidate who would not otherwise be able to join an MA programme.

Andrew Franklin, MD of Profile Books, will also mentor the successful candidate through your year of studies at City University London. Profile is an award-winning independent UK publisher of commercial fiction and non-fiction – and Andrew’s offer is therefore a valuable opportunity, which will enhance both your studies and your career prospects after the MA year.

The Scholarship award:

  • Will provide funding to the value of home/EU fees (Full Time EU: £9000) to a deserving applicant to one of the City University London MAs in Publishing
  • Shall be at the discretion of the awarding panel.

The Panel’s preference is for candidates:

  1. who meet the MA application requirements
  2. who demonstrate commitment and aptitude to develop a career in publishing, especially commercial book publishing
  3. who can provide evidence that their financial circumstances are such that only such a Scholarship would make the MA programme possible
  4. BME candidates are especially welcome.

Applicants may apply for this Scholarship alongside other sources of funding, but these must be detailed on the application. The Scholarship will not include a maintenance grant.

Applicants who are successful in receiving awards from other sources of funding which cover their tuition fees will not be eligible for the Scholarship, and must inform the Programme Director. Eligibility will not be affected by funding covering maintenance costs. The Scholarship cannot be transferred to maintenance costs.

Award criteria

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

  • Evidence of the applicant’s potential to contribute actively to and benefit from the programme, including references and/or other evidence of prior achievements, not only in publishing (eg writing or reporting, blogging, vacation jobs or voluntary roles, or positions of responsibility)
  • A written submission which demonstrates commitment to a career in publishing, especially book publishing, and a review of how the master’s course will contribute to the applicant’s learning and career development
  • Evidence of financial need.

Submission material

Applicants for the Scholarship must already have submitted by the time of application a full application to the MA in Publishing or International Studies for 2015–2016. To apply, please see http://www.city.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/publishing-studies or http://www.city.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/international-publishing-studies and choose How to Apply.

Submission process and deadline

The application must be made by email (maryann.kernan.1@city.ac.uk) to Mary Ann Kernan, Programme Director, MA in Publishing Studies, dated no later than 10 July 2015. Applicants will be informed by email of the Scholarship Panel’s decision (which will be final) by 22 July 2015. A place on the programme will be held for the successful candidate.

Please note: The 2015–2016 Welcome Week commences on 21 September, and teaching on 28 September. Students must be available for full-time class attendance until the end of March 2016, with some potential to gain placement experience or take part-time work. Please contact Mary Ann with any queries you may have.
