An exciting contest for writers [INTERVIEW]

Tahira Rahemtulla

This is an interview with Tahira Rahemtulla, a senior editor at Unambiguous Edit. Tahira is hosting a writing contest, That’s Write!, as a lead of Unambiguous Edit, in collaboration with TLAC Printing and Publishing, BookMachine, and Wildfire Studio.

1. Tell us a little bit about Unambiguous Edit. Is it a book editing company?

Unambiguous Edit is an online editing service; we used to focus just on books, but our clients were so pleased with the quality of edits and service, we had a lot of demand for other editing services. So now we offer editing for all documents.

2. Why is Unambiguous Edit part of this collaboration for That’s Write!?

The publishing industry has been undergoing major changes in the past decade, especially with widespread use of internet and mobile technology. Many departments of a traditional publishing company have disbanded, largely due to the economical option of outsourcing.

While there seem to be more writers cropping up, there are also other venues for them to publish their work. The competition of being published by an established company has led to a lot of writers publishing their unpolished work online.

We wanted to take the opportunity to remind those writers that they have at their disposal the service of all these separate publishing skills, ready to help increase the value of their hard work.

In the spirit and celebration of collaboration, Unambiguous Edit wanted to create this contest with fellow members of the publishing industry to offer the opportunity of a unique publishing service: a combination of the skilled trades of different companies, coming together to benefit 3 special stories.

3. What is the ultimate goal for this contest?

Well, we’d like writers to be able to find new venues for publishing their work, to consider other options. But ultimately it’s to create awareness that writers should take advantage of the mulitiplicity of services available that can boost the value of their book: professional editing, book printing options, fantastic cover designs, and marketing through networking channels.

4. Is this contest a one-time event?

We’d like to make this an annual event. We scheduled the entry times to coincide with National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), which saw over 310,000 participants in 2013. In fact, we set up our early bird period to benefit all participants of NaNoWriMo; once they finish the month and their 50,000 word manuscript, they can submit their story to That’s Write! during December, the last month for early bird entries.

5. When is the entry period for the contest?

The contest is open from September 2014 to the end of January, 2015. The early bird entry is open until end of December. There is a fee, to cover administrative costs, but ALL participants receive a discount for services at Unambiguous Edit, so the fee they pay in entering the contest is going towards a service they benefit from, whether their manuscript is chosen or not.

We are, however, accepting a limited number of entries, which means the contest entry period may close early.

Anyone interested in entering should enter as soon as possible, and can do so here: www.thatswrite.net
